Find an Article Using a Citation

How to get access to a journal article when you have title, author, year, etc.

Step 2 - Look Up the Periodical

When you have the citation information necessary to access your article, you can look for it using the tools on the Harrisburg University Library's website.

For purposes of illustration, the following citation is used:

From the Library's website, click the Browse Journal Subscriptions option under the main search box. For a shortcut, go directly to the Publication Finder page.

  • The Journal List will appear:

  • From the Publication Finder page, start typing the title of the journal, newspaper, or magazine (periodicals) in which the article was published. You may be able to select the title you are seeking from a drop down menu that will start to appear or click the magnifying class icon when you have finished typing. Be sure to spell the periodical title correctly as the Publication Finder does not correct for typos.

You cannot search by article title at this point. Doing so will likely result in zero results.

 

  • Scroll down if necessary to find the periodical's details. In addition to confirming the title, you will find other details including what type of source it is, and whether it is peer reviewed. Sometimes more than one supplier provides the periodical, Use your citation to determine what year the article you are seeking was published, and click the supplier link that covers that year. In the example below, click the EBSCO Open Access Journals link to find an article published in 2022.

  • You will be taken to a contents page for the journal similar to the one shown below. Click on the link to the volume, issue, and year that matches your citation.

  • Now you can access the article you were seeking by clicking on the pdf link or title of the article you need. Be sure to match the article title, author, and page numbers to your citation. The list of available articles from the volume you selected in the previous step will look similar to the example shown below.
