Student Library workers represent Harrisburg University and the Library. Students are the reason we have jobs and they deserve the full attention and respect of the Library team. This page explains your general responsibilities and expectations.
Page Contents:
What You Are Expected To Do
- Behave professionally and courteously.
- Show up for work on time and stay for your entire shift. Notify your supervisor as soon as possible if you are unable to make your shift due to sickness or other emergency.
- Lead fellow students and university staff to the assistance they need.
- Complete assigned projects by deadline and in consultation with your supervisor.
- While you are on duty, your job is your main responsibility.
- If friends drop by, ask them to meet you after work.
- Avoid non-emergency personal calls.
- No homework while on duty.
- Respect fellow workers and students in the Library.
- Cooperate as a friendly team player with coworkers and supervisors.
If you are unable to answer a question or otherwise assist a student or staff member, always tell your supervisor and provide the person's contact information for follow up.
What You Are NOT Responsible For
- You are not expected to monitor or correct the behavior of other students. However, if intervention is necessary due to an emergency, disruptive behavior, or actions that put individuals in danger, call the Security Desk at (717) 901-5180.
- You should not provide extended research consultation. You can get students started using the resources on this guide, then always refer them to a librarian.
- You are not expected to provide tech support for printers, laptops, or other equipment. Refer patrons to the IT Helpdesk if necessary. They can visit on the 2nd floor of the Academic Tower (same as library) or email: OISHelp@harrisburgu.edu.
- You are not expected to help students with homework.
- While we ask that you clean up trash that can be easily disposed of (bags, papers, cups), you are not expected to clean up spills or messes. If you see something that requires cleaning supplies, contact facilities.
