Self-Paced Library Instruction

Self Paced Library Instruction

Self-Paced Library Library Instruction can help faculty easily incorporate foundational lessons about library research and services throughout a course to help students become independent, proactive library users. Self-paced instruction offers a place for students to learn library skills at their own pace, or refresh skills that haven't been needed in a while.

Self-paced instruction can also prepare students for a classroom visit by a librarian, helping them to quickly grasp basic skills that would otherwise take a significant portion of class time to cover. Librarians can then use classroom time to address more complicated concepts that are better suited to discussion and demonstration.

Self Paced Library instruction consists of:

  • Library 101 - basic searching and retrieval for all library users
  • Advanced Library Learning

Most of the exercises and tasks will take only a few minutes of students' time. The modules can be used independently unless noted otherwise, and faculty can choose the modules that are most critical for each course.

All students should be periodically reminded of the expectations regarding Academic Integrity and Plagiarism Avoidance.

As you read through the suggested scaffold, keep the following in mind:

  • Requests for instruction should be made at least two weeks in advance to allow for adequate preparation and set up. Please offer several dates when making a request for IL sessions.
  • Please keep fair use guidelines in mind. More information can be found on our Copyright and Fair Use Guide
  • Students and faculty can use the Get Help page to contact a librarian for research, academic integrity, and citation assistance.
