Getting Started With Your Research

How to get started with the research process.

Research Basics

Some basic skills are required for a successful research experience: These include how to conduct a general search using library databases, how to locate the exact material that you want, and how to choose resources that are most likely to lead you to the information you need. T

There is no set order to the process of academic research, and it is a cycle that can repeat several times during one project. However, the following actions can always help you get started:

  • If you don't know a lot about your topic yet, you can get up to speed by gathering some background information.
  • When you are ready to begin your research, search the Library's databases to search for books, articles, news, reports, and other types of material related to the wide variety of subject areas taught at Harrisburg University and much more. The material you find in these databases is paid for by Harrisburg University through your tuition dollars, and is curated by the Library. You will not find this material for free on Google, though you can and should supplement your research using Google.
  • If you need a specific book or article, see:
  • When you need to create a bibliography, see the Citing Sources Guide.
  • If you need material the the Harrisburg University Library does not have access to, we might be able to obtain it through Interlibrary Loan services.
